Mary E. Silveira Elementary School is fortunate to partner with Bay Area Community Resources (formerly New Perspectives) to provide free counseling services to all grades of our student body.
What kind of counseling is offered?
We have three onsite counselors who are trained to provide students with one-on-one, confidential support around issues that might affect their academic and relational lives such as identifying and regulating emotions, managing anxiety, or building resilience. Our counselors can also help students who are navigating challenging issues or life transitions such as parental divorce, death, family illness, recently moving, bullying, puberty, and new siblings.
Treatment approaches include talk, play, expressive art, and cognitive behavioral therapies with an emphasis on cultural sensitivity and social justice. Students can be seen for multiple sessions, short or longer term. Sessions are 30 minutes each and take place during non-critical class time.
Does the counseling team offer other services?
Yes, in addition to one-on-one therapy with students, our counseling team also offers trauma response, parent education, teacher consultation, case management, and group work.
How can I inquire about support for my student?
You may ask for a consent envelope in the school office or your child’s teacher can submit a referral on your behalf. Once the counseling team receives your completed Consent Forms, a member of the team will call you to set up an appointment to speak about your goals and needs. Based on availability and urgency of need, the counseling team will determine the best path of support for your child.
